Week 9! 13 October

Let's see....African studies, Discovery Park with friends, Totem pole creation, reading pages from her book, addition using equations now, family fun, nature walks, lots of books, piano...... I'm on the run so I'll edit the book list later on. Fall Break starts this afternoon and she will be with her father for 10 nights. Both happy for her but also very sad she won't be with me. Here are the highlights of our week in picture:

We are continuing our studies of women in history. She is still loving the stories of female inventors and spends time sketching, mapping, and planning elaborate play scenes and thinking about how things in her life work. Thankful to have Google at hand to research all of her questions and give an answer quickly. Girls Think of Everything is our latest source, we are happy to have added it to her library.

Piano is going well. She is still excited to practice and to compose new pieces. We learned new songs this week and listened to music from China as part of geography studies.

At Gymnastics she has almost mastered a back flip! I have great video but can't seem to get them to upload here.

Always interested in construction! A new Tegu model. This one is the duck.

This week we used a few online resources to supplement our reading in science and geography and played a phonics game.

She has been fascinated with learning about addition via number lines.

She created more sentences with our flashcards to tell stories.

We took our horses out bareback trail riding a few times. Her sitting trot is very good now and she stays out of Angel's mouth.

We picked the last of the summer flowers.

Week 7! 29 September-3 October

We've been reading through The Fox and the Hound this week and Cell Defenders as we talk about germs and healthy habits.

The pond was very clear for a few days due to lack of rain and so we spent time observing the baby fish, the bigger fish that eat them, the tadpoles, and caught a few to observe more closely.

On our nature walks she has been looking at the animal prints in the deep, dry dirt and making those of her own. In this case, she was making bear and monkey prints to compare.

History this week was working through our Knights sticker book. We listened to Early Middle Ages music as we worked on the book.

Grandma Sherry came for a visit!

In Reading, I wrote out the new words she has been learning on flashcards and we created sentences out of them.

Friday we met with the Homeschool Group for a study on Trees. She made many leaf rubbings and identified several trees.

Music is still a daily ritual for us and she is enamored with it. She 'writes' her own compositions in a little notebook Grandma Sherry bought her. She even played one for her piano teacher yesterday. She played a very dramatic piece and told me the name was "Danger". Her practices have been going well and she seems to really love it. She is also frequently playing her recorder, and anything that makes a drum sound. We spent time listening to the Music Together: Family Favorites during her art projects this week. She became frustrated that the keyboard will not allow her to play in soft or loud tones, she can only adjust volume. In explaining to her why she became interested in how a piano made sound and so we watched and discussed a video about that on youtube.

In Science, due to her interest in the topics, we studied how a propeller is attached to an airplane, how cells defend against germs, and how a ceiling fan turns. She drew diagrams in her notebook of how she thought they worked, completely spontaneously, brought them to me and then we looked up the answers together. It seems the books on inventors really has her attention!
