Last week I began recording every book we read. Here is our list for this week:
- A trio of Ladybug Girl books. These tell stories of a very strong and creative little girl whose imagined alter ego is a superhero dressed in a ladybug costume. Ellie has since chosen a Monarch costume for Halloween.
- Marvelous Mattie: How Margaret E. Knight Became An Inventor. This one I bought for her personal bookshelf which we are filling with stories of women throughout the world who make a difference and have varied careers. We want her to know she can be anything with hard work and to show her those who have done so. Ellie was fascinated with the line drawings that were included of her inventions from her sketchbooks. she wants to be an inventor now.
- The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. We looked up images of the High Line Park, a series of gardens planted on abandoned train trestles that wind through Manhattan, which was the inspiration for this book. Ellie wants to see this someday. We talked about gardens and the differences between living in the city versus living in the country.
- Window, Mirror, Moon by Liz Rosenberg
- Earthsong by Sally Rogers. We found the video on Youtube and sang the book together. We discussed taking care of the earth and inhabitants as well as locations on a map of the animals we sang about.
This has been a week that she has really ate up math and been slower on reading. I have supplied her with all the Inchimals she wanted to do, and as much of her math workbook she wanted. Whenever we cooked together we talked about math concepts. Although she was slower with reading this week, she was so happy to be able to read one of the pages in her book smoothly! I have pictured it below. What a moment it was for me too!
We listened to Vivaldi's Four Seasons, focusing on fall and talked about the way the music sounded and what it made us feel like, and how it seemed to match the drama of falling leaves and magnificent colors.
One of her art projects, after reading about an artists use of patterns, colors, and lines by looking at famous painting and breaking down those techniques, was a watercolor. I recorded what she told me about it on an index card and attached it per usual. She blows me away daily!
Piano lessons have been going well too! She is always excited to go and to practice at home.
Our science experiments have focused on color chemistry and observing the process of the crystals absorbing and then releasing water. She created a journal entry for the experiments.
And of course there has been dirt sculpture during our daily nature walks!
One of her Tegu constructions:
In geography we have been studying the compass rose and map legends.
So, there is a brief snapshot of our week 6!
